Anarchy!
It’s happening as we speak, er type, er read, um….
Just know that it is happening, the Revolution. Most of us do not realize it, but it’s coming; a wave of anarchy…
“What in the world are you talking about Josh?”
“Who me? Oh, I don’t know anything…”
In other news Google has quietly become a legitimate telecom company.
Huh?
Oh, you didn’t hear? You can call people from your computer for free now; that’s right, FREE.
Zip, Nada, Zero, Libérer, Befreien Sie, 随便
Ok, so free calls are only for those of us calling people within the US and Canada (International Rates are very low, we’re talking 2 cents per minute for some places), and according to Google they are only free through the end of the year. You’ll also need a Google Voice number, but guess what? Yep, those are free too.
The best part about all of this is you can make calls from your Gmail inbox.
See that innocuous “Call phone” icon on the right hand side? All you have to do is click that and this call widget will pop-up.
Viola!
By the way, your Google Voice number will be displayed when you call someone too (not 01010101010101 or some other weird string of numbers).
Sounds great huh? But what about if someone needs to call you? Bummer, huh?
Not so fast my friend! Believe it or not, this works too. All you have to do is go into your Google Voice settings and select the check box next to Google Chat like so:
Now when someone calls your Google Voice number and you are logged into your email, here’s what you’ll see (along with an alert–no word on whether you can change the default tone yet).
Is Google taking over the world? Maybe. Am I bothered by this? Not one bit. Should phone companies be worried? Perhaps…
P.s. Larry and Sergey: I can send you a copy of my resume, or simply share with you via Google Docs if you’d like! Call me–on my Google Voice number of course!
